Drawn Near

In a world that often feels fragmented and isolated, the timeless parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) offers us a profound message of hope and unity. This story, told by Jesus, is more than a lesson in kindness; it's a call to live in close relationship with God and each other, breaking down the barriers that divide us.

The story begins with a man who falls into the hands of robbers. Left beaten and half-dead, he lies on the road, his predicament unnoticed or ignored by passersby. But then, a Samaritan, an unlikely hero in Jewish culture, stops. Moved with compassion, he tends to the man's wounds, takes him to an inn, and ensures his care. This Samaritan didn't just offer help; he got involved, and he changed his proximity.

In our fast-paced, digital age, it's easy to be like the Priest or the Levite in the story, who saw the wounded man but chose to pass by. We're often distracted or too busy, wrapped up in our own worlds. But Jesus's message is clear: real living, real thriving, happens when we draw near to those in need when we bridge the gap between “us” and “them,” and when we embody His love in tangible ways.

The Good Samaritan didn't allow societal norms, prejudice, or fear to dictate his actions. He saw a fellow human in need and responded. Today, we're called to do the same. Whether it's lending a listening ear, offering a helping hand, or standing up for those who are marginalized, every act of kindness draws us nearer to the heart of God and each other.

The beauty of this parable lies in its simplicity and its challenge. It doesn't require extraordinary measures but asks us to be intentional in our everyday interactions. It's in the simple acts of kindness, the willingness to listen, and the courage to step out of our comfort zones that we truly live out our faith.

As we reflect on the parable of the Good Samaritan, let's ask ourselves: Who are the 'wounded' on our paths? Are we willing to draw near, to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a world that desperately needs His love?

Today, let us choose to live in proximity to God and each other. Let's open our eyes to the needs around us and respond with compassion and action. This isn't just a call to charity; it's a call to a way of life – a life marked by love, service, and genuine connection.

Let's commit to being modern-day Good Samaritans, to living out our faith boldly and lovingly in our communities. Imagine the impact we can have when we choose to draw near, to care, to love. This is our calling. This is our mission. Let's embrace it with open hearts and open hands.

In doing so, we not only find the joy and fulfillment that comes from serving others, but we also draw closer to the heart of God, experiencing His love and grace in profound ways. Let's start today. Let's be the change. Let's draw near.

Remember, every small act of kindness has the power to change a life. You are equipped, you are called, and you are loved.  Let's journey together to live out this beautiful, life-changing truth.
